Liverpool saw a triumphant 4-0 win over Barclays Women’s Super League newcomers Charlton Athletic in last week’s season opener, following what the team saw as a highly successful pre-season. This Sunday they face an in-form Tottenham Hotspur, and head coach Gareth Taylor feels they’ve finally reached a “light at the end of the tunnel”. 

With promising new signings and that crucial win under their belt, Liverpool are looking forward with a renewed sense of belief in what the club can achieve - a sentiment long overdue. 

Things didn’t move in Liverpool’s favour last year, having endured many disappointing results and only narrowly avoiding relegation. This can largely be attributed to a number of unprecedented circumstances, from persistent injuries following the squad throughout the season to the club incurring two devastating losses in September and October respectively; beloved ex-coach Matt Beard, and kit manager John Humble. 

Speaking in her press conference ahead of Crystal Palace’s fixture against Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday, Manager Jo Potter was full of optimism as Palace look to continue their new chapter after being promoted to the WSL once again. She was explicit that they have “got quite a few strings to [their] bow”, something they did not hide in their first match of the season.

Fresh from winning promotion to the top flight in 2025 and becoming the first fully independent club in the WSL, London City have gone from strength to strength. Strong signings this summer transfer window propelled the Lionesses to the front of the WSL, with the club and key investor Michele Kang not afraid to splash the cash in Bromley.

Newly promoted Crystal Palace are determined to achieve a better finish than their first season in the WSL, following a statement signing of UEFA European Championship winner Bethany England. 

Crystal Palace achieved promotion following a strong and successful WSL2 campaign where they beat Portsmouth 6-1 on the final day, securing a second-place finish. Palace won 12 of their 14 league games, an impressive tally for manager Jo Potter’s first season with the club after previously spending two years at Rangers. She was brought in following a disappointing season in the WSL in 2024/25 where Palace finished 12th, ten points behind Tottenham Hotspur in 11th, where they only scored four league goals and registered two wins. 

Charlton Athletic return to the topflight in September for the first time since they were relegated from the FA Women’s Premier League at the end of the 2007/08 season. Their promotion will end an 18 year absence from the top flight, making them the 21st different club to compete in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

Karen Hills’ team secured this promotion after a competitive play-off final that saw the Addicks beat Leicester City on penalties, in front of a record crowd at The Valley. Following an impressive form in the WSL2 last season, Charlton are ready to make their WSL debut with statement performances and strong ambitions.

London City Lionesses finished sixth in the Women's Super League (WSL) table at the Copperjax Community Stadium against Aston Villa this season after a quick turnaround, with Freya Godfrey's strike in added time confirming the club’s top half finish in their first ever WSL campaign.

Lynn Wilms pulled the visitors ahead with a superb shot following a corner in added time just before the break in the first half, before Danielle van der Donk equalised after half-time, with Godfrey adding a second. 

London City, who had mixed results in their debut season in the top flight so far, were looking to go one better after their defeat against Tottenham Hotspur left them seventh in the table, while Villa were aiming to make a comeback after heavy defeats by Arsenal and West Ham United in the last few weeks left them with three losses, one draw and one win. 

Champions Manchester City will lift their first Barclays Women Super League trophy in 10 years on Saturday, as they travel to East London to face West Ham United on the last day of their victorious season.

Scott Phelan emphasised the importance of “consistancy”,  continuing their focus and professionalism heading into their final away game of the season against Arsenal on Wednesday. 

Taking over as interim head coach after the departure of long term boss Brian Sørensen, Phelan led the Toffee’s to their first back-to-back wins in the WSL against Aston Villa and London City Lionesses in his opening two outings. A win against Tottenham Hotspurs sandwiched between four defeats in a tough block is how the Liverpool side stand heading to The Emirates Stadium for a rearranged fixture due to the Gunners UWCL commitments.

Everton have seen some good moments against Arsenal in recent years, a 0-0 defeat on the N7 turf in the last WSL campaign was a boost for the team against a top side.

Liverpool hosted Brighton & Hove Albion at home on Sunday in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup Semi Final. Despite falling short in the 95th minute with a devastating 3-2 loss, the Reds displayed a stellar first-half performance and showed promise in front of a home crowd. Denise O’Sullivan and Beata Olsson scored two early goals to put Liverpool ahead, but the Seagulls upped the tempo in the second-half and progress to the Final at Wembley.
