Putellas Opens WSL Account as the Seagulls Fall to a Clinical London City
London City Lionesses host Brighton & Hove Albion at the Copperjax Community Stadium for a tight contest in the Barclays Women’s Super League.
In front of 4,177 fans, the hosts showcased technical and progressive football to continue their statement season in the topflight. With Alexia Putellas on the scoresheet to open her WSL account, and Lucía Corrales tapping one in moments before the final whistle, the Spanish internationals made the difference in Bromley.
The Seagulls pressured consistently, with a tight-knit defence that perplexed Eder Maestre’s side. A physical contest unfolded as the hosts grew increasingly frustrated that they could not slot the ball past Brighton’s backline. In only their fifth match under Arturo Ruiz’s leadership, his style of play started to emerge on the field as Brighton defended confidently with composure.
This match certainly showcased the elite competition within the WSL, from Spanish stars at the forefront of the goals, to leadership presences driving the Seagulls’ possession game. But after ninety minutes, London City Lionesses came out on top.

Eder Maestre’s London City side look for a dominant win over the hosts following a period of positive momentum in both league and cup fixtures. Meanwhile, Ruiz’ side prepare for the challenge of playing away in Bromley against a world-class squad. Brighton need to dig deep for points after a difficult run to start their 2026/27 WSL campaign.
The hosts sit in fourth place in the WSL table with six points on board, whereas the Seagulls stand in tenth with only two points to their name so far.
Kadidiatou Diana is set to start this weekend following netting her first club goal midweek in the Subway Players Cup. After a period on the sidelines with a long-term injury, the former Lyon winger looks to make her mark in the WSL alongside her French teammates.

Putellas Separating the Sides in the First Half
Kick-off is underway at the Copperjax Community Stadium. Within thirty seconds the French linkup between Diani and Grace Geyoro on the right emerges with an attacking display that creates a dangerous ball into the Brighton box.
Mapi León sends a free kick into the box, but no blue shirts are able to connect and head it home. Shortly after, Brighton gain momentum with two consecutive corners but no real danger is posed.
The Spanish linkup between Putellas and León is showcased in a short corner routine where the centre-back curls the ball into the box. Jana Fernández heads it wide.
An early booking for fullback Caitlin Hayes gives the Lionesses another free kick in a dangerous area. León once again finding Putellas who mistimes her shot.
The hosts dominate attacking situations in the early stages of the match, proving a handful for the Seagulls’ backline. Defensive actions once again give Maestre’s side a corner kick. However, Geyoro commits a foul on Chiamaka Nnadozie to reset for a goal kick.
London City open the scoring! Continued pressure from the home side results in a shot from Geyoron defended directly into the feet of Putellas who cannot miss from close range. The captain fires home to break the deadlock half an hour in.
At the other end, the away side come close with Seike’s rebound stretching to the side of the post. A close call for London City as they remain in the lead. An end to end contest so far. Hayes heads Diani’s effort off the line, keeping Brighton in the game as halftime nears.
With only one minute of added time, the hosts see the game comfortably out to the whistle. A determined effort from the Seagulls’ defence with London City’s clinical edge making the difference at halftime. Although possession stats are level, the pitch has told a story of confidence and ambition from Maestre’s side.

London City’s Clinical Edge Seals the Victory
Moments into the second half, Marisa Olislagers comes close with a curling effort from outside the box narrowing missing the near post. The Seagulls look to threaten as they trail by only one goal.
A card for Manuela Vanegas is given for a heavy challenge on Diani as she drives towards goal under pressure. León repeats her free kick routine finding Putellas once again. She heads it wide, but the pressure suddenly mounts on Brighton’s defence.
Delphine Cascarino enters the field for England international Freya Godfrey. Immediately the French linkup stars on the flank, as she moves the ball around alongside Geyoro and Diani. Pressure mounts once again for the Seagulls.
However, Seike comes close again with an effort saved by Elene Lete. The Japanese international showing quality in the number nine role as she cuts inside to split the Lionesses’ defence. Brighton increase the tempo with a spell in the opponent’s half. Fran Kirby heavily involved in the possession football performed by Ruiz’ side.
Despite pushing for an equaliser for a long period of the second half, London City score late on to secure a 2-0 victory. Van de Donk collects the ball in the middle of the field with a long ball to Cascarino. She drives forward sliding the ball across the box where Corrales taps it home. A powerful finish from the Spanish fullback to double the lead.
One final chance for Brighton late on with a free kick outside the box, but London City clear the ball confidently and come away victorious in Bromley.

Standout performers
Diani and Geyoro proved challenging to mark on the right flank, overlapping forward play and showcasing their technical ability on the ball. Alongside French forward Cascarino, the international teammates proved a handful for Brighton as the linkup in attacking sequences of play.
Player of the Match, Putellas reminded why she is a two-time Ballon D’Or winner with a class performance once again. She threatened consistently and forced the away team to defend tightly and close her down, opening up space for Van de Donk and Godfrey ahead of goal.
Defensively for the Seagulls, Hayes was a solid presence at the back. She committed herself fully to every challenge and stepped up against highly technical players.
In the midfield, Kirby and Lia Wälti commanded the Seagulls’ set up. Using their experience and leadership qualities, they ensured the side were organised and prepared to face their opponents with composure and belief.

On Wednesday, London City Lionesses travel away to WSL2 side Ipswich as they look to continue momentum in the Subway Players Cup. Meanwhile Brighton host Spurs at Crawley in a tough WSL match up.
WSL action returns at the weekend as the Seagulls host a struggling Charlton at the AMEX Stadium. Maestre’s Lionesses travel to North London where they face an in-form Tottenham Hotspur side. Two fixtures that will test attacking movements and defensive solidity, where both clubs look to build on previous performances to push up the table.
