Clinical Thompson secures Derby Day Win despite the Gunners’ Glory Hunt

Chelsea host Arsenal at Stamford Bridge in a historic London Derby in the Barclays Women’s Super League. A loud reception for both sides with 19,349 in stands to witness a very feisty clash between rivals.

Despite a positive start for Renée Sleger’s Arsenal, the momentum shifted totally once Alyssa Thompson found the back of the net on the rebound. The American winger with a clinical finish that changed the game, giving the Blues a vital three points in their WSL campaign.

Although the Gunners looked to threaten on the attack in the opening stages, Chelsea put bodies on the line and emerged as derby day victors once again at the Bridge. A huge result for the WSL table, giving in-form Chelsea an advantage over a struggling Arsenal side.

Starting XIs

Chelsea: Hampton (gk), Carpenter, Malard, James, Thompson, McCabe, Kaptein, Walsh, Bronze (C), Buchanan, Potter.

Arsenal: Borbe (gk), Fox, Stanway, Williamson, Catley, Caldentey, Little (C), Baum, Batlle, Russo, Cooney-Cross.

End-To-End First 45

Arsenal start the half strong, with Lisa Baum a bright spark on the right flank. All the action in the Chelsea half with the Gunners pressing high and controlling the play completely.

Alessia Russo chasing down every ball at the front, with Leah Williamson and Ona Batlle first to the ball when Chelsea look to attack. Kim Little strikes from close range with the ball bouncing off the right post. Almost an opener for Arsenal who have come to the Bridge with a desire to win.

Chelsea’s first real effort comes from Lauren James with a left foot attempt to lob Anneke Borbe from outside the box. However, the German goalkeeper catches safely.

The Blues then give Mariona Caldentey work to drop as Lucy Bronze, Keira Walsh and Lexi Potter pass the ball around comfortably before Ellie Carpenter makes a fast-paced run down the flank, sending the ball across goal. Melvine Malard almost gets a shot away, but the Arsenal backline close her down.

On the counter attack, Russo turns magnificently creating space for the Gunners to drive into. Caldentey with a shot from close range that somehow misses the target.

With an electric crowd at Stamford Bridge, the action is end to end. Alyssa Thompson retrieves the ball allowing James to send a hurling effort into the box, Borbe’s safe hands collecting the ball once again.

Leah Williamson rises high from Steph Catley’s free kick, heading the ball over the crossbar. Another close call for Bompastor’s Blues as the Gunners put them under pressure.

Thompson breaks the deadlock! Malard’s pressure on Steph Catley causes a loose passed to be picked up by Carpenter. The Australian international sends the ball to Keira Walsh who takes a low shot. Borbe dives and punches the ball away, but the American winger is waiting for the rebound and smashes the ball into the net. Momentum shifts completely with the hosts capitalising on a defensive error.

Carpenter finds Malard who sits on the last defender and drives forward, missing an attempt that should double the hosts’ advantage. McCabe takes a corner next to the away end, given a booking for taking too long on the set piece. Swinging the ball to the far post, Lucy Bronze connects but heads into the hands of Borbe.

Blues advance to Victory

McCabe waits for the offside flag but Baum drives with a succinct ball across the Chelsea goal, narrowly missing the line and then cleared by the Irish fullback.

James commits a foul on Cooney-Cross giving Catley a free kick to send the ball into a dangerous area. The attack falls through and Chelsea shift momentum with Thompson heavily involved in the threat.

Slegers makes a triple change shortly into the second half. Baum exits for Chloe Kelly. Stanway leaves for Stina Blackstenius. Caldentey makes way for Caitlin Foord.

Bronze picks up a loose Arsenal pass and sends Malard through on goal, but the French number nice struggles to find that clinical finish needed to give the hosts total advantage.

James exits for German international Sjoeke Nüsken, who looks to strengthen the Blues’ attack.

McCabe swing in a corner from the right, caught directly by Borbe with confidence. At the other end, Alessia Russo almost chips Hannah Hampton with a ball over the top of the Chelsea backline, but the top of the next saves Bompastor’s side.

Nüsken involves herself immediately sending a ball to Thompson who squares up Walsh on the edge of the box.

Malard leaves the play for Aggie Beever-Jones. The young forward looking to get back on track scoring goals in the WSL.

Selina Cerci and Geraldine Reuteler enter the field in place of Little and Batlle. The Sumer signings look to give the Gunners an outlet to get back into this London Derby late on.

Chelsea bring on Sandy Baltimore and Veerle Buurman with four minutes to go, giving a much needed breather to Thompson and McCabe after a committed effort.

Two consecutive corners for Catley. Both cleared away by a determined Chelsea defensive group.

Some late pressure from the hosts sees the match out. The touchline erupts as Heaslip blows the final whistle and the Blues secure derby day rights. From one end to another, this match had it all. The Blues leave with bragging rights and three points to push into third place.

Post-Match Reflections

Arsenal Captain, Kim Little reflected on a tough derby day defeat. When questioned on what made the difference, she struggled to pinpoint a specific aspect with both teams competing at such a high level:

“Against two high quality teams it can be such small margins.”

Chelsea midfielder Keira Walsh spoke about her role in the game, determined to have an impact and perform to high standards in every game, which she feels she was not doing last season:

“For me I just wanted to have more of an impact. Last year I sometimes let games pass by without having a real impact and that’s just something I’m focused on this season. And obviously having Lexi [Potter] behind allows me to do that.”

Walsh commended the team morale and ability to work alongside each other, which ultimately makes the difference in Chelsea’s success on and off the pitch:

“I think in general the team’s working really well together, the forwards, the number tens. Wieke is working really hard this season, she’s had an exceptional start to the season, so I think a lot of our players are in form which helps and just working really hard together is important.”

Looking Ahead

Both sides return to WSL at the weekend with two highly-anticipated clashes. Chelsea travel to London rivals, West Ham United in a decisive match to remain in the balance at the top of the table, with sights set on reclaiming their title as WSL Champions.

For Slegers’ Arsenal, they travel to the Etihad Stadium to face top-of-the-table Manchester City. In impressive form, following four consecutive wins in four to start their 2026/27 campaign, the Sky Blues are a tough opposition. Arsenal must be clinical and turn up on Sunday, otherwise their season could be in jeopardy early on with a below-par start.

The Hammers host Chelsea on Sunday 4th October (14:00 KO), whilst the Gunners travel to Manchester on the same day (16:30 KO).
