A five star performance highlighted London City Lionesses high ambitions as a new era is underway.

The Lionesses will travel to the Chigwell Construction Stadium on Saturday to face West Ham United in their first away trip of their 2026/27 Barclays Women’s Super League campaign, where they look to build on an impressive opener. Head coach, Eder Maestre outlined long-term expectations, reviewed the team’s performance against Manchester United in the season opener, and highlighted the competition on the training pitch for a place in the starting eleven.

Meanwhile, summer signing Janni Thomsen addressed the media, discussing the differences between the WSL and NWSL, her new role at London City, and making her debut in front of a sold-out crowd in Bromley.

London City Lionesses have considerable shoes to fill following a summer which saw further development in owner Michelle Kang’s plan to create an independent women’s ‘super’ team. With eight new signings, ranging from global stars to new young talent, it seems everyone is anticipating whether they will continue to undergo growing pains in the coming season, or take the league by storm and reap the rewards of Kang’s monumental investment.

They will be playing in the WSL opener against Manchester United on Friday the 4th of September, and this is what head coach Eder Maestre and Daniëlle van de Donk had to say ahead of the clash.

The Copperjax Stadium was buzzing with excitement during London City Lionesses’ friendly against Atletico Madrid, and it wasn’t just Alexia Putellas’ Bromley debut that was causing a stir.

Following on from a summer of almost unbelievable signings, London City have had something crucial to prove in their pre-season fixtures, that these new players will make an impact on the pitch as well as off it. After wins against Sevilla and Benfica, and a draw with Sporting CP, expectations were high going into the match, with Liga F team, and competitors in last season’s Champions League, Atlético Madrid expected to be their toughest competition yet. As their only home match before the 26-27 season, it was the perfect opportunity to prove themselves against the tough Spanish team.

Ambition was at the forefront of everyone’s minds in anticipation of London City Lionesses’ media day ahead of the 2026/27 Women’s Super League (WSL) season. And they were not putting it lightly. 

Fresh from winning promotion to the top flight in 2025 and becoming the first fully independent club in the WSL, London City have gone from strength to strength. Strong signings this summer transfer window propelled the Lionesses to the front of the WSL, with the club and key investor Michele Kang not afraid to splash the cash in Bromley.

London City Lionesses finished sixth in the Women's Super League (WSL) table at the Copperjax Community Stadium against Aston Villa this season after a quick turnaround, with Freya Godfrey's strike in added time confirming the club’s top half finish in their first ever WSL campaign.

Lynn Wilms pulled the visitors ahead with a superb shot following a corner in added time just before the break in the first half, before Danielle van der Donk equalised after half-time, with Godfrey adding a second. 

London City, who had mixed results in their debut season in the top flight so far, were looking to go one better after their defeat against Tottenham Hotspur left them seventh in the table, while Villa were aiming to make a comeback after heavy defeats by Arsenal and West Ham United in the last few weeks left them with three losses, one draw and one win. 

London City Lionesses travelled to Brisbane Road for their penultimate match of the season in the Barclays Women’s Super League on Sunday. Despite a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, there are still many positives to take from the club’s first season in the topflight.

Eder Maestre discussed recent performances, his future with London City, the mindset he believes will get the best out of the team, and the growth of women’s football as the 2025/26 season almost draws to a close.

Despite a spirited performance from the hosts, the league leaders once again demonstrated their championship pedigree and pushed nine points clear in the league, above holders Chelsea. However, a club record crowd of 3,418 made this a special occasion for London City Lionesses.

London City Lionesses have appointed Eder Maestre as their new head coach, following the shock sacking of Jocelyn Prêcheur. 

The Spaniard has signed a deal until the summer of 2028 and will take charge in his first match on Sunday 11th January against Liverpool in the Barclays Women’s Super League. Following the announcement, Maestre is set to begin work today, which includes meeting the squad as they return from the winter break.

England international Nikita Parris has left Brighton and Hove Albion following the expiration of her contract. She is joining London City Lionesses, on the back of their promotion to the Barclays Women’s Super League.

Parris joined the Seagulls from Manchester United on deadline day in September 2024. She made an immediate impact, scoring on her first league start, just two minutes into a WSL match against Aston Villa. She then went on to net twelve goals in twenty-eight appearances across all competitions.
