Lynn Wilms: WSL Player Spotlight
Lynn Wilms is a twenty-five-year-old right centre-back for Aston Villa Women.
Wilms’ presence brings strength, intelligence and versatility to the Villains’ backline. She is comfortable on the ball and capable of playing both in central defence and as a right-sided fullback.
Having developed her game at FC Twente before shining with VFL Wolfsburg in Germany, Wilms is becoming a prominent choice for both club and country. Now continuing her journey with Aston Villa domestically, and the Netherlands internationally, she looks set to remain a key figure in the modern game, combining defensive solidity with attacking intent.
A vital three points
Starting in defence for Aston Villa against West Ham United, Wilms delivered a standout performance at both ends of the pitch. Defensively, she remained composed and assured on the ball with her impeccable reading of the game and ability to intercept threatening attacks.
Going forward, Wilms made a decisive impact by driving play forward and linking up intelligently down the right flank. Whilst the defender provided a pinpoint assist to enhance Villa’s lead, her standout moment was certainly her flawlessly struck free kick that found the back of the net.
The Villains required a top performance to take three points from the Hammers, in a must-win contest to make their mark on the WSL this season. Wilms in fact produced this desired display that showcased her quality, confidence and growing influence in Natalia Arroyo's Villa side, and pushed her team to victory.
Regarding Wilms’ place in Arroyo’s squad and her contributions to a solid three points, the head coach was impressed:
"It was absolutely deserved. Good goals, another clean sheet so a good performance again."
Facing the Foxes
Wilms' next test comes in Aston Villa's upcoming clash with Leicester City.
Fresh from an impressive display against West Ham, where she combined defensive solidity with a brilliant free-kick goal and an assist, the Dutch defender will look to carry that momentum into this fixture. The focus will be on how she handles Leicester’s attacking movements while keeping calm on the ball to help Villa build from the back.
Both the Foxes and the Villains experienced a tough start to the season, so three points are important to show their prominence and ability to threaten for a top-half finish in the league. Performances like these could be key to Villa’s progression in the WSL this season.
