Kerstin Casparij: WSL Player Spotlight
Kerstin Casparji is a twenty-five-year-old defender for Manchester City Women.
A composed and versatile defender, Caspari brings strength, intelligence and composure to the back line. Comfortable on the ball and quick to read the game, she adds stability while also supporting the attack when needed.
Already making her presence felt for the Netherlands, Caspari looks set to be an important figure in both domestic and international football.
Influential from the back
Starting in defence for Manchester City against London City Lionesses, Caspari delivered a standout performance at both ends of the pitch.
Defensively solid and composed in possession, she broke up attacks with confidence and kept play moving from the back. Her impact was capped with a well-timed assist, showcasing her ability to contribute in the final third as well. In a dominant 4-1 win, Casparij showcased a complete display that highlighted her growing influence in Andrée Jegerletz’ side.
Her performance stood out through her ability to intercept London City’s attacking threats and drive forwards into the final third. As an attacking full back, she influences play both defensively and, on the attack, which sets her aside from many others in that position.
The head coach reflected upon the team performance but reminded that Manchester City faced several problems that he will address in coming weeks. However, he recognised the positive influence of experienced individuals, such as Casparij, particularly in the first half:
"I think the start of the game is definitely great, the first twenty to twenty-five minutes, we were very good. We had some problems when they pressed us high and we didn't really find the right solution to it. We talked about it at half-time and the second half was under control... We played what the opponent was giving us ... we need to be able to play a different way of winning football."
Looking ahead
Kerstin Caspari's next test comes in Manchester City's upcoming clash with Arsenal. Fresh from an assured display against London City Lionesses, where she proved herself a reliable defender with the ability to provide assists and promising balls into the box when called upon, the Dutch defender will look to carry that momentum into this next challenge.
It will certainly prove interesting how she handles Arsenal's dynamic attacking threats while also providing composure on the ball to help City build from the back. Keep an eye on her positioning, decision-making under pressure, and willingness to push forward when the opportunity arises.
If Manchester City want to push for a return to the UEFA Women’s Champions League, and to become WSL Champions, these are must-win fixtures that require clear focus and ambition.
