Everton to “Stick to their Principles” Aiming to Overcome Top of the Table Chelsea

Chelsea Women face Everton Women this Saturday at Stamford Bridge, with the hosts looking to maintain their grip on the Barclays Women’s Super League title race.

Sonia Bompastor’s team enter the weekend in brilliant form, sitting joint-top of the table with a near-flawless record of seven wins and a draw from their opening eight matches. For Everton, currently sitting eighth, the trip to London is their toughest test of the season so far. But the team, redefined by defensive grit under manager Scott Phelan, will look to challenge Chelsea for those vital three points.

With 27 goals scored and just four conceded across the campaign, Chelsea spend long stretches of games dictating the tempo, but Everton will hope their own defensive strength is enough to frustrate the top of the league and capitalise on counterattacks.

Breaking Down Bompastor’s Blues

In his pre-match press conference, Phelan said that Chelsea's dominance of the ball serves as their best defensive shield:

"They're being dominant with the ball, therefore they have less defensive actions to face, which naturally helps. When they're in defensive situations, they've got some real top players, and I think combined with the top coaching that's probably why they've conceded less goals so far."

Despite the difficult task of breaking down a backline that has conceded just four goals all season, Everton travel south with their heads held high. The Toffees showed resilience last weekend, digging deep to hold a strong Manchester United side to a 0-0 draw. It summed up Phelan’s tenure so far: anchored on defensive solidity, Everton have already kept three clean sheets in eight matches.

Phelan’s transition from the club's academy to the women's senior team has been historic; he recently set a record by picking up 13 points in his first eight home matches, more than any other manager in Everton Women’s history. But Saturday’s game will require absolute tactical discipline, and Phelan made it clear that despite Chelsea’s ability to rotate world-class personnel, Everton will stand their ground and stick to their identity:

"Every opponent has a subtle difference to them. Some less subtle, like Chelsea," Phelan said honestly. "But we know the game will be challenging. We haven't changed anything drastically. I think it's important that you stick to your principles and what you believe in and how you think the team should look."

“It’s not always the best idea to obsess about individuals in case that person doesn't play,” Phelan said when discussing Chelsea’s potential starting line-up. “We're more concerned about how Chelsea have approached each game, and that has been consistent and gives us a good idea for this weekend.”

A Test of the Toffees Squad Depth

Everton's defensive defiance is made even more impressive by a mounting injury crisis that took another hit on the training ground this week as forward Holly McNamara sustained a hamstring injury that will keep her out for the short term, while Zara Kramzer and Inma Gabarro remain sidelined with longer-term issues.

Chelsea's tactical flexibility, with fullbacks Ellie Carpenter and Lucy Bronze regularly overloading the penalty box, will ruthlessly test Everton’s stretched squad depth.

Still, Phelan remains unfazed by the prospect of moving players into unfamiliar positions to counter Chelsea's fluid system. "Fortunately, we've got a number of players who can play in two or three positions, and we hope they take them opportunities and continue to add some threat to our team,” Phelan said, pointing to his team’s adaptability against Manchester United as proof they can remain fiercely competitive.

Seeking a Victory against the Odds

While history heavily favours Chelsea, who have won 18 of their last WSL meetings against Everton, this weekend offers Phelan’s side a chance to pull off an upset much like Everton’s 1-0 win over Chelsea in December 2025:

“A lot of the players who caused that upset are still here, so that definitely gives some confidence,” Said Phelan. “But also our performance last weekend, in particular, against a good team in terms of Man United, was good and we want to build on last week and in the previous positive performances and try and improve step by step.”

“We know the level of challenge that Chelsea brings to any team. That'll be no different on Saturday, and I'm sure the players have got some positive references around what it takes to win against Chelsea: hard work, commitment, togetherness, and then obviously some quality when we're in possession of the ball as well. So, hopefully, that can give us an advantage heading towards the game at the weekend.”

Chelsea host Everton on Saturday 7th November (12:45 KO) where Phelan’s Toffees look to rewrite history and take a huge three points back to Merseyside.
