Taylor targets progress as Liverpool prepare for Chelsea test

Liverpool women head coach Gareth Taylor has praised his squad’s growing confidence and resilience as they prepare for a challenging Barclays Women’s Super League trip to Chelsea at Kingsmeadow on Sunday.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Taylor reflected on recent momentum, squad development, and the importance of belief as Liverpool continue their climb away from the lower reaches of the table.

Manager of the Month Recognition

Taylor opened by acknowledging his Manager of the Month award, insisting the accolade reflected collective effort rather than individual achievement.

He highlighted the impact of January recruitment and behind-the-scenes work, while stressing that Liverpool are still some distance from where they ultimately want to be. The focus, he said, remains on long-term development and consistency rather than short-term validation.

Confidence Drawn from Earlier Chelsea Performance

Taylor pointed to Liverpool’s earlier draw with Chelsea as evidence of tactical maturity, praising the players’ discipline and execution against one of the league’s strongest sides.

He noted that Liverpool had limited Chelsea’s attacking threat effectively, despite limited options from the bench at that stage of the season. With improved depth now available, Taylor believes the squad is better positioned to sustain intensity throughout matches.

Squad Depth and Injury Update

The Liverpool boss confirmed that Sophie Román Haug had undergone surgery and faces a long recovery, while Yana Daniëls is edging closer to a return following partial reintegration into team training.

Taylor also highlighted the growing impact of players such as Gemma Bonner, Fuka Nagano, and Mia Enderby, underlining how competition for places has raised overall performance levels.

Goalscoring Momentum and January Reinforcements

Liverpool’s improved attacking output was another key talking point, with Taylor attributing recent goalscoring form to sharper execution in the final third and increased confidence.

He reserved praise for Martha Thomas, describing her as one of the league’s most effective attackers of crosses. Taylor emphasised her intelligence, pressing ability, link-up play, and physical presence, noting that her influence extends far beyond goals alone.

Chelsea Challenge and League Context

Despite Chelsea’s recent results promoting external scrutiny, Taylor dismissed talk of a crisis, pointing to their sustained success and the transitional nature of elite squads.

He acknowledged the broader WSL landscape, noting how fixture congestion and European commitments have created opportunities for teams outside the Champions League. Nevertheless, Taylor stressed that Liverpool approach the fixture with realism, respect, and quiet confidence.

Momentum and Mental Preparation

Asked by Olivia Rafferty of Her Game Her Way, Taylor reflected on Liverpool’s emphatic 4-1 victory over Aston Villa, describing it as psychologically significant in lifting the team away from the relegation zone.

He highlighted the competitiveness of the league and the importance of capitalising on a busy January window across the division. While acknowledging the difficulty of the Chelsea challenge, Taylor said the squad is approaching the fixture with excitement and clarity of purpose.

Rafferty also questioned how the squad has been mentally prepared for such a high-profile test, particularly given Chelsea’s historical dominance in cup and league encounters.

Taylor reported by underlining the importance of belief, clarity, and expectation. He made it clear Liverpool are not travelling to Kingsmeadow merely to “make up the numbers”, but to test themselves, impose their identity, and compete for evry minute.

A Benchmark Fixture

Taylor concluded by describing the Chelsea match as a valuable benchmark rather than a season-defining moment. He emphasised that success will depend on concentration, work ethic, and execution of fundamentals across the full 90 minutes.

With confidence growing and squad depth improving, Liverpool Women head into Sunday’s clash determined to measure their progress against one of the league’s established powers.
