Since James’ introduction, the England international brings roars to the Chelsea crowd. Her intelligent footwork pushes the Blues closer to their first goal of the afternoon, but Cuthbert lack precision in her finish.
Bompastor uses her final substitution with Cuthbert making way for Sjoeke Nüsken, a direct swap in the central midfield role. Lauren James attempts a shot from the edge of the box, safely caught by the hands of young goalkeeper, Anneke Borbe.
A more defensive substitution faces Renée Slegers, as goalscorer Caldentey makes way for new fullback, Smilla Holmberg. The Swedish internation slots into the lineup, providing extra support to keep the Blues at bay.
Hampton parries the ball away from Blackstenius’ close-range shot, preventing a third goal for the Gunners. Moments later James chips a ball to the head of Nüsken, who cannot find the target unmarked in the box.
The Gunners continue to push, with time running away from Chelsea. Fullbacks, McCabe and Fox make way for Laia Codina and Taylor Hinds, further protecting Arsenal’s lead defensively.
Bronze continues to influence play along the right flank, consistently swinging crosses into the Arsenal box. However, once more the Blues struggle to find the target: this time James shooting wide of the post.
Thompson drives forward, her ball cut out by Captain, Kim Little. James fires in a powerful corner, parried away by Borbe who inspires a counterattack from Arsenal. At the other end, Hampton prevents a third goal passing her with an assured save. Chelsea continue to threaten, but lack the clinical edge required of Champions.
Despite impact subs of James and Nüsken, the Gunners maintained intensity and tactical play to overcome the Blues in a 2-0 victory. Bodies on the line and defensive solidity did not allow Bompastor’s side even one goal at the Bridge.
Final score: Chelsea 0-2 Arsenal
A vital three points for Arsenal
Arsenal now push only one point behind Chelsea, with 26 points on board. The Gunners return to positive form after a tough run of fixtures, maintaining above North London rivals, Spurs in the league.
If Manchester City secure three points against London City Lionesses tomorrow, they could shift nine points clear in the top spot. This result might be a pivotal moment in City’s title race, providing them with a distinct opportunity to overcome the WSL holders for the first time under Bompastor.
Arsenal’s first win away at Chelsea since 2018 proves that the competition in the WSL is rising, and no team is guaranteed a place in the top three without consistency and tactical dominance. Mead’s masterclass could be the turning point in the Gunners’ return to positive form and fuel their ambition.
