From sportsmanship to wives : Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis’ New Year’s Eve wedding
Matildas captain, Sam Kerr is set to conclude a tumultuous year on a joyful note, with new details emerging about her New Year’s Eve wedding to fiancée Kristie Mewis in Perth.
As 2025 came to an end, the football power couple-who welcomed their son, Jagger, earlier this year formally married in Kerr’s hometown, in what many fans have described as Australia’s version of a royal wedding.
The ceremony was held at a private residence in Western Australia, with approximately 120 guests invited. Speaking on her podcast Mewis Squared, Mewis revealed that around 100 attendees, including teammates from both the Matildas and the United States women’s national team, were present. The couple has intentionally scheduled the ceremony later in the evening to align with New Year’s Eve celebrations:
“We kind of shifted everything later because we want to celebrate New Year’s Eve with everyone. The ceremony doesn’t start until later because it’s a New Year’s Eve wedding.”
Before their relationship quietly began in 2019, Kerr and Mewis first crossed paths as international rivals, regularly competing while representing Australia and the United States. Public interest intensified during the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, when post-match interactions between the two drew attention. They were later confirmed as one of the most high-profile couples in women’s football.
Their relationship has not been without challenges. After Kerr relocated to England in 2020 to join Chelsea, long-distance separation became a regular part of their lives, as Mewis continued her career across the United States and Europe. Kerr also endured injury setbacks, but Mewis remained by Kerr’s side throughout her recovery from a serious ACL injury. In 2024, the couple announced the birth of their son, Jagger.
Despite the significance of the occasion, the couple will not embark on an extended honeymoon due to football commitments. Chelsea is scheduled to face West Ham United on January 11, limiting Kerr’s availability. Mewis noted that they may attend the men’s World Cup together instead, potentially combining the trip with a later visit to Mexico:
“I know that isn’t very honeymoonish, but Sam really, really wants to go, and I obviously want to go too… I think we could maybe do that, and then at the end of it or something, we want to tie in maybe like Mexico.”
The couple has also chosen to write their own wedding vows, though both acknowledged on the podcast that neither had begun drafting them at the time of recording. On the field, Kerr’s achievements place her firmly among football’s elite. Since making her Matildas debut at the age of 15, she has become Australia’s leading international goal scorer across both men’s and women’s football, with 69 goals from more than 120 appearances.
Since joining Chelsea in 2020, she has scored over 60 goals for the club and has won multiple domestic titles, along with two Women’s Super League Golden Boots and four National Women’s Soccer League Golden Boots.
Mewis has also built an accomplished international career, earning more than 50 caps for the United States and securing an Olympic bronze medal at the Tokyo Games. She signed with West Ham United in 2023 after playing for the Houston Dash and Gotham FC in the NWSL and announced earlier in 2025 that she would leave the club when her contract expires.
Together, Kerr and Mewis have become more than elite footballers. They are among the most recognisable and influential figures in women’s sport, admired not only for their success on the pitch but also for their authenticity and commitment to promoting visibility and queer joy.
As they celebrate their wedding, they continue to embody a modern sporting partnership that resonates far beyond football.
