Gareth Taylor issues scheduling concerns and injury updates ahead of Arsenal

Liverpool Women’s manager, Gareth Taylor delivered several important updates ahead of his side’s rescheduled fixture against Arsenal Women in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

He expressed both concern and optimism as the squad navigates injuries, tight scheduling, and the demands of the post-international-break period.

Fisk a major doubt as Liverpool manages “light” squad

Taylor confirmed that Captain, Grace Fisk remains a significant doubt for Saturday’s match after sustaining an injury while on duty with England. Fisk is still gathering information regarding her recovery timeline, and Taylor admitted the upcoming fixture may “come too soon” for the defender.

He described Fisk’s absence as a “major setback” due to her leadership, physical presence, and quality on the right side of defence. Despite this, Taylor emphasised that her injury presents “an opportunity for others to step forward and contribute.”

The manager also revealed that Liverpool have been dealing with “a few minor issues” in training both on and off the pitch, with further clarity expected following tomorrow’s session. He acknowledged that the squad appears “a little light” , but praised the adaptability of the group.

Taylor referenced Sam Kerr’s recent back problem, describing it as a minor stress- related issue more commonly seen in young players experiencing growth spurts. Though disappointed for her personally, he emphasised Kerr’s importance to the squad and the need to manage her recovery carefully.

Frustration over scheduling and player welfare

Taylor voiced concern over the possibility of the FA rescheduling the fixture for next Thursday- just days before another match on Sunday. He stressed that such a turnaround poses an unnecessary strain on players:

Player mental health and well-being will always be the primary consideration… A Thursday fixture followed by a Sunday game would be far from ideal.

Saturday’s kick-off is also less than favourable, but Taylor reiterated that the squad must remain adaptable.

Managing workload and player development

Taylor shed light on the individualised approach to player development this season.

He highlighted Fisk’s pressing qualities, physical resilience, and previous contributions, noting that she had limited recovery time after being heavily involved last season.

He also discussed the integration of summer signing, Beata Olsson, praising her intelligence, personality, and ability to adapt to club football after differing international demands and less intense training schedules with Sweden.

Positive signs despite tight scorelines

Reflecting on Liverpool’s performances so far, Taylor believes the team played some of their best football in the opening fixture of the season. While many recent results have been narrow such as a 1-1 or 2-1 scorelines - he sees encouraging signs of growth.

Regarding Arsenal, he understands they are a tough opposition with a successful squad and superior depth, but ensures that the Reds are ready to face them on Sunday:

Arsenal are always a difficult opponent, but we understand what is required against top teams.

Tough away run and maintaining mentality

Liverpool face a challenging stretch of three consecutive away matches, each requiring overnight stays - an added demand following the international break. Taylor praised his squad’s mentality and resilience, noting their understanding of the physical and mental challenges ahead.

He pointed to the recent match at Brighton, where Liverpool surrendered a 93rd minute lead, as a learning moment:

It’s about drilling home the positives, staying consistent, and applying pressure throughout the entire match.

Players learning their opportunities

Taylor ended by highlighting that several layers have impressed-some through additional training, others through international duty.

He noted that Beata Olsson “fully deserved” her chance and added that not every player has had the opportunity to showcase their strengths in every fixture, making internal competition vital. Her consistency in front of goal has proved pivotal in Liverpool’s fight this season and remains a key element in his future vision.
