Martin Ho commends the resilient and supportive environment at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur Women manager Martin Ho insists his side are ready to meet the demanding nature of the Barclays Women’s Super League, despite an “emotional week” on and off the pitch.

In comparison to last season, the team are already showing great progress. However, it is important they remain grounded and resilient to maintain consistency.

Supporting Jessica Naz

Spurs advanced in the Subway League Cup with a penalty shootout win over Aston Villa, but the victory was overshadowed by racial abuse aimed at forward Jessica Naz. Addressing the media, Ho praised Naz’s strength and called for accountability.

“She’s doing well. She has strong support from the club, from me, her teammates, and the staff. Naturally, the messages she received were upsetting and unacceptable, but she’s handling it very professionally.”

Ho added that the incident highlighted wider issues around online safety:

“It’s not just an attack on an individual, it’s about humanity, equality, and respect. We must hold social media companies accountable and ensure these spaces are safe.”

Naz featured against Leicester City at the weekend, with Ho confirming:

“Whatever she feels, we’ll support her fully.”

Paying tribute to Matt Beard

The press conference also carried a sombre tone as Ho paid tribute to the late Matt Beard, a respected figure in the women’s game.

“He was a really special person—an icon in football, not just women’s football. His success with Liverpool, Chelsea, Bristol, and West Ham put women’s football on the map. It’s a reminder that mental health and support are vital.”

Squad Resilience and Fitness Update

Despite setbacks in recent weeks, including a league defeat to Manchester City, Ho praised his squad’s resilience and mentality.

“The players trained well, responded positively, and showed character in the penalty shootout against Aston Villa. That’s exactly the mental resilience we want.”

On the fitness front, defender Molly Batrip is edging closer to a return.

“Molly is training well and moving in the right direction after injury. With new staff bringing high-level experience and detail, we’re in a strong position.”

The manager also praised goalkeeper Lize Kop, who produced three key saves in Wednesday’s shootout.

“It’s a cruel way to lose, but she was outstanding. We want her to take confidence from those moments.”

Ho emphasised the need for consistency and discipline for Spurs to continue in positive form:

“Consistency takes time, but if we give our best and stay focused, there’s no reason we can’t achieve a positive result.”
