Simone Magill: WSL 2 Player Spotlight

Simone Magill is a thirty-year-old forward for Birmingham City Women. She made her move to the Barclays Women’s Super League 2 side this summer, and made an instant impact on their success.

Known for her intelligent movement and work rate in the final third, she is a forward who combines sharp finishing with a strong physical presence. Confident in linking play and pressing from the front, Magill adds attacking threat while contributing defensively. Bringing experience at both club and international level, she remains an influential figure capable of shaping games and inspiring those around her.

A positive start

On the opening weekend, Magill marked the occasion with a clever assist, showing her vision and precision to unlock the opposition defence. Her contribution created a key breakthrough, giving her side the platform to build momentum. It was a performance that underlined her attacking influence: her creativity and experience proved instrumental in shaping a 5-1 win against Bristol City Women.

However, her quality in the final third and impact on the Blue’s attack was cemented in their first away fixture of the season against Sunderland AFC Women.

In the second half, Magill set up the equaliser. A perfectly timed ball provided the assist for Viatriki Sarri that brought Birmingham level. Her decisive contribution ensured the Blues took a valuable point from the game, underlining her influence in a hard-fought contest.

Head coach, Amy Merricks shared her thoughts on the overall performance:

"So look, not a good goal to concede, a good response get a point. Um and then we go again."

The future

Magill’s next game comes against Newcastle United WFC on Saturday. Having created the equaliser with a well-timed assist, the key question now is whether Magill can become a consistent influence to Birmingham's attack.

Her link-up play and awareness make her a constant threat, but consistency across fixtures will be vital. It will be worth watching how she combines with the other forwards around her and whether she continues to operate centrally or drifts into wider spaces to stretch defences.

Could her creative contributions be the key to Birmingham City picking up vital points in the WSL 2?
