Decision Day Approaches: Who will come out on Top as the NWSL enters the Play-Offs

The National Women’s Soccer League regular season is reaching its climax with the race for the playoffs, home-field advantage and the NWSL Shield set to go down to the final day. With just one round of fixtures remaining, the 2026 campaign has delivered plenty of drama, and Decision Day on Sunday 1 November, promises to provide a fitting conclusion before the post season begins.

Four teams secured their playoff places following the latest round of fixtures, but one spot remains available. Meanwhile, the battle for the regular-season title and the opportunity to host a quarter-final are still to be decided.

Gotham FC and San Diego Wave battle for the Shield

Gotham FC head into the final weekend in pole position to claim the NWSL Shield, holding a three-point advantage over second-placed San Diego Wave. Gotham strengthened their position with a 2-1 victory away to Orlando Pride, with goals from Midge Purce and Tierna Davidson helping them move closer to the regular-season title.

Their defensive performances have been a major strength throughout the campaign, although their attacking output remains an area to watch as they prepare for the knockout stages.

San Diego, meanwhile, remained in contention after a 2-2 draw against Boston Legacy ended their five-match winning streak. The Wave have nevertheless maintained an impressive run of form, remaining unbeaten in their last six matches. They must defeat Bay FC and hope Gotham drop points against Utah Royals if they are to overtake their rivals.

With both sides still having plenty to play for, the final round could determine who finishes the regular season with the Shield and the advantage that comes with it.

The fight for home advantage

While the Shield remains the main prize of the regular season, the battle for a top-four finish is another important storyline.

Washington Spirit, Kansas City Current and Angel City FC are separated by just a few points, leaving the final round crucial in determining the quarter-final hosts.

Washington suffered a 2-1 defeat against Kansas City in their latest outing, allowing the Current to close the gap. Angel City also strengthened their position with a convincing 2-0 victory over Bay FC, extending their unbeaten run to nine matches.

Kansas City have won four consecutive games and will look to carry that momentum into the postseason. Their recent form has put them in a strong position to challenge for home advantage.

For these sides, finishing higher in the standings could prove significant as they look to make a deep playoff run.

One playoff place remains

Perhaps the biggest question heading into Decision Day is who will claim the final postseason berth.

Seattle Reign currently occupy the final qualifying position, with North Carolina Courage and Denver Summit FC still hoping to overtake them. Seattle’s goalless draw against Utah Royals means their place is not yet guaranteed. They face Orlando Pride in their final fixture, knowing a victory would secure their progression.

North Carolina, meanwhile, have struggled in recent weeks, losing five of their last six matches. They must respond against Denver if they are to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Denver remained in the race after producing an emphatic 6-1 victory over Racing Louisville. The result highlighted their attacking potential and kept their hopes of a postseason appearance alive.

With Seattle and North Carolina facing difficult challenges and Denver entering the final weekend after a significant win, the battle for eighth place is set to be one of the defining stories of Decision Day.

Momentum heading into the postseason

As the regular season draws to a close, recent performances could play an important role in shaping the playoff picture.

Angel City have put together an impressive unbeaten run, while Kansas City have built momentum through four consecutive victories. Both will hope to carry that form into the knockout stages.

Portland Thorns also secured their playoff place with a 1-0 win over North Carolina, continuing their record of reaching the postseason in every season since the club entered the league.

Elsewhere, Utah Royals made history by qualifying for the playoffs for the first time in their history, marking a significant milestone for the club.

These storylines demonstrate the different paths teams have taken throughout the season, from established contenders maintaining their challenge to clubs achieving important milestones.

Decision Day: What comes next?

All 16 NWSL teams will play simultaneously on Sunday, 1 November, with every match carrying potential implications for the final standings.

Gotham FC host Utah Royals, while San Diego Wave travel to Bay FC in the race for the Shield. Seattle Reign face Orlando Pride, and North Carolina Courage meet Denver Summit in the contest for the final playoff place.

With the standings still capable of changing, supporters will be watching closely as the final positions are confirmed.

The regular season has provided compelling storylines across the league, but the biggest challenge is still to come. Once the playoff bracket is decided, the focus will turn to which teams can deliver when the pressure is at its highest.

As Decision Day approaches, the NWSL has set up a dramatic finale, with the Shield, home advantage and the last playoff berth all still to be settled.
