Drew Spence signs long-term contract with Spurs after successful start under Martin Ho
Tottenham Hotspur announced midfielder, Drew Spence has signed a new, long-term contract with the club.
During over three successful years with the club, Spence has made seventy-five appearances, with ten goals to her name. Aged thirty-three, there is no intent for the midfielder to hang her boots up just yet.
The Jamaican international brings dominance and passion to Spurs’ midfield, unafraid to challenge for the ball and pose attacking threat from outside the box.
This deal is a huge boost for Martin Ho’s Spurs, especially following the current injury list of players affiliated to Tottenham Hotspur.
Her career so far
In the summer of 2022, the Jamaican international made a move across London: from Chelsea to Tottenham Hotspur.
On her competitive debut for Spurs, it was meant to be for the midfielder. Spence scored in a 2-1 win over Leicester City, marking her first of five goals throughout her 2022/23 campaign in Lilywhite. In her first season with the club, she made a remarkable twenty-eight appearances and proved herself as a top player who influences the fluidity and possession play in the middle of the field.
Despite suffering an injury the following season, Spence experienced a historical campaign for Spurs: she played a pivotal role in the club reaching the Adobe Women’s FA Cup Final for the first time. Her leadership and determination secured her place in the squad for this historic trip to Wembley Stadium.
Consistency is one of Spence’s key attributes, having started nineteen of twenty-one matches in all competitions throughout the 2024/25 campaign. Ho has continued to give Spence the go ahead to start in nine of ten Barclays Women’s Super League outings this season, with Tottenham Hotspur only one point shy of their total number of points achieved last season (twenty).
Internationally, Spence secured a place in Jamaica’s 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup squad, where her national team reached the knockout stages for the first time. For her country, she has nineteen caps to her name and three goals, but there are certainly more opportunities to increase this number as the New Year approaches.
Spence has proven to work perfectly with Eveliina Summanen, as the midfield duo have taken the league by storm in the opening ten fixtures. Ho recognises this partnership, which allows this new, long-term contract to go ahead without question. There is no doubt that this news brings relief to Spurs fans, who understand the huge role Spence plays in winning midfield battles, playing with heart and aggression, and ultimately securing success for the Lilywhites.
Thoughts on this statement new deal
Head coach, Ho spoke about Spence’s contract renewal and praised the midfielder for the assets and driven mentality she brings to his Tottenham side. In an interview with the club, he praised her experience and composure on the pitch:
"Drew has fully earned this new contract. What sets Drew apart is not just how she plays, but how she behaves. She leads by example every single day. Her work ethic is unwavering, her competitiveness is infectious, and her willingness to take responsibility has become a benchmark for others. Her personality carries weight in this group, she brings experience, honesty and a calm authority that strengthens the entire environment.
She adds huge value to our young players who look to her, and equally to our senior players who respect her presence and consistency. Drew is a connector in the dressing room, a driver on the pitch, and a person who embodies what we want this club to represent.
This new deal isn’t just a reward for her performances, it’s a statement about her growth, her leadership, and her importance to the future of this team."
Spence herself assured that she is comfortable at Spurs and continues to learn within the positive environment at Hotspur Way:
“I'm really happy. I feel so comfortable here at the Club and I can see where it’s progressing to. I can see that progression and it shows in our results so far.
It feels like a family. The feeling amongst the girls is great and we're learning every day. It's been a massive six months for us, and we have to keep taking these steps.”
