Everton sign former Aston Villa full-back Maz Pacheco

Everton have announced the signing of twenty-six--year-old defender, Maz Pacheco from Aston Villa. Following the expiration of her contract with the Villains, Pacheo awaits a new chapter in Merseyside.

The Philippines international becomes the eighth addition to Brian Sorensen’s squad this summer, ahead of Everton Women’s historic first season at Goodison Park. With memories of her childhood at the heart of this move, Pacheco looks to make an impact on this promising side ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Her career

Born in Ormskirk, Pacheco began her football journey at Liverpool’s academy and has since played for Doncaster Rovers Belles, Reading, West Ham, and most recently, Aston Villa. Growing up in Merseyside, a move to Everton has significant meaning to the full-back.

She represented England at youth level, featuring in the U17 and U19 European Championships, and was part of the Under-20 World Cup squad. However, she parted ways with England after this major tournament in the hope of a new chapter with the Philippines.

In 2024, she opted to represent the Philippines at senior international level. Pacheco is yet to make her international debut for the nation, as her call-ups are subject to receiving a Philippine passport. However, there is a bright future ahead of the defender and she will no doubt play a huge role in the team once able.

The next chapter

Pacheco will wear the number thirty-three shirt for the Toffees, as she aims to add depth and tactical intelligence to the backline. As an attacking full-back, her ability to push forward with speed and recover quickly when called upon makes her a promising addition to Sorensen’s side.

Reflecting on the move, Pacheco told Everton tv:

It is amazing to join Everton. To be at such a historic club is an unbelievable feeling. I wanted to stay in the WSL and give it my all. I’ve matured as a player, and for Everton to bring me back home is fantastic.

She described returning to Goodison Park - her first-ever football stadium visit - as “surreal,” recalling childhood memories of watching matches from the top tier while wearing blue wigs with her grassroots club. With this iconic stadium being the new home of Everton Women, there is an added element of excitement for the young Phillipines international.

The defender emphasised the importance of staying close to family, reconnecting with friends already in the squad, and the chance to play at the iconic Goodison Park. She also highlighted positive discussions with manager Brian Sorensen and the backing of The Friedkin Group, Everton's new owners, as key factors in her decision.

To be at a club with backing from the owners, the Men’s team, and staff—it’s amazing. It’s important to play for pride, to play for the badge. It was a no-brainer once I saw the investment being made into the Women’s side,” she said.

Manager Brian Sorensen praised Pacheco’s experience and character:

Maz is a top-quality player who brings experience and intelligence on and off the pitch. She already has good relationships with players in our squad, and she’s fully aligned with our vision. She’s a great addition ahead of a landmark season.
