Sydney Lohmann: A move across Europe awaits the German Midfielder

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of central midfielder, Sydney Lohmann from Bayern Munich ahead of the new Barclays Women's Super League season.

The twenty-five-year-old is heading to England to start a new chapter, pushing herself outside her comfort zone. With a three-year deal, she has her sights set on success and personal development in the blue side of Manchester.

She is a new addition, capable of strengthening the hold-up play and dominance within the midfield. But why make a move to Manchester City from such a successful German club?

Her footballing career

Lohmann is leaving Bayern Munich on the back of a standout campaign in the Frauen-Bundesliga. She accumulated a huge one-hundred-and-fifteen appearances, scoring twenty-three goals in total.

The versatile midfielder began her career with Bayern Munich II, before breaking into the first team, where she quickly made her mark. In the 2017/18 season, she became a regular member of the squad. Since, she has stayed with the club and developed significantly as an ambitious and reliable player. Her departure will certainly be a great loss to José Barcala’s side.

She has also represented Germany at a senior level, earning over thirty caps and featuring in major international tournaments, including the UEFA Women's EUROs 2022. This summer, she is competing on the international stage once more, representing Germany in the EUROs 2025. In such a competitive footballing nation, securing a spot in the twenty-three-player squad for this tournament is an incredible achievement.

The move to Manchester

In her first interview with the club, Lohmann spoke positively about her move to England, and her ambitions during this time:

"I have a really positive feeling here at Manchester City… I've always had the thought to playing abroad at some point in my career and I just had the feeling that this year was the right time to do that."

Manchester City Women's Director of Football, Therese Sjögran, explained their intentions to sign Lohmann this summer. She added:

"We're really pleased to have been able to secure Sydney's signature and bring her winning form to the Club. Her experience at both domestic and international level will be a valuable asset to our squad."

Her contributions in blue

Known for her composure on the ball, tactical intelligence, and leadership qualities, Lohmann is expected to bolster City's midfield as they push for silverware both domestically and in Europe. Following a tough season, affected by a long list of injuries, the squad are looking to get back on track and reach new heights. Being one of their new signings, the midfielder could be the key to unlocking a new era for the Blues.

After the EUROs, the German is set to join up with the squad. The move is made easier with her international teammate, Rebecca Knaak, also playing her club football with the the Blues. If all goes to plan, she intends to make her debut in City's opening WSL fixture, where fans will welcome her warmly to the pitch.

The excitement and competitiveness of the English league attracted the experienced midfielder to Manchester City, but can she rise to the challenge and intensity of the WSL?
